The White House issued a forceful rebuttal to "anti-Jewish hate" as controversy swirls over a progressive lawmaker's comments.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) caused a stir last weekend by declaring Israel "a racist state" in comments made at a conference. The Biden administration said Monday that it welcomed her apology and went a step further on Tuesday.

"When it comes to antisemitism, the entire Biden-Harris administration has been clear that when Israel is singled out because of anti-Jewish hate, that is unacceptable," press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in response to a reporter's question. "We've been clear on speaking against antisemitism."

While Jean-Pierre never mentioned Jayapal or her comments directly, she followed up on comments made the day before by National Security Council coordinator John Kirby.

"An apology was the right thing to do for those comments," he said. "Our commitment to Israel is ironclad. We're going to make that clear and consistent every chance we get."

President Joe Biden met Tuesday with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, a meeting that was still occurring when the press briefing took place.

Jayapal said that "we have been fighting to make it clear that Israel is a racist state" in response to protesters who invaded a conference where she was speaking, but she apologized within hours by saying she does not believe the idea of Israel as a nation is racist.
