Washington, D.C., is preparing for an influx of visitors this weekend for the Army‘s parade, with the Secret Service expecting hundreds of thousands of attendees.

The Army has planned an all-day festival concluding with a parade featuring military equipment to honor its 250th anniversary, which falls on Saturday.

“We’re preparing for an enormous turnout, hundreds of thousands of attendees. It’s our duty to ensure the safety and security of every participant. We are deploying thousands of agents, officers, and specialists from across the country,” said Matt McCool, Secret Service Washington Field Office special agent in charge.

Around the festivities and parade route, there will be more than 18 miles of fencing, 17 miles of bike rack concrete barriers, and 175 magnetometers for attendees to pass through. Law enforcement, including local and federal officers, will also use drones for surveillance.

“You may also notice multiple drones operating in the area. These are great tools for operational situational awareness and part of our layered security strategy,” McCool added. “Rest assured, all drones will be owned and operated by the Secret Service or our partners, so please do not be alarmed.”

There will be several road closures around the D.C. area, as well as designated entry checkpoints for the festival and parade. There will also be a spot for families to go to if they get separated.

Military vehicles in the parade include Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, Stryker armored fighting vehicles, and artillery launchers. The military has sought to prevent street damage from the military vehicles by placing metal plates along the parade route.

McCool said the Secret Service is not expecting significant protests at the parade and will not “do anything with” people using their First Amendment rights. However, he noted they will handle any instances of violence “swiftly.”

During a Meet the Press interview last month, President Donald Trump said the parade’s estimated $45 million cost is “peanuts compared to the value of doing it.

Army leaders have said they believe the parade will be a valuable recruitment tool.
