A Manhattan grand jury has voted to indict former President Donald Trump for charges related to his alleged involvement in making hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.

The historic move leaves Trump in a position that no other U.S. president has faced, and it leaves many people wondering what exactly an indictment is.

An indictment is a “formal document presented to a court for prosecution and voted by the grand jury that contains charges against an individual who has committed a crime,” according to the New York Police Department.

An indictment is voted on by a grand jury, which is a group of 23 people who hear arguments and review evidence presented by prosecutors in felony cases in New York. The group then decides whether there is sufficient evidence to file charges, according to the NYPD.
