Many Western countries are providing new aid packages to Ukraine following a meeting of defense leaders on Friday.

Leaders from roughly 50 nations met in Brussels at this month’s gathering of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, where they discuss Kyiv’s most pressing needs.

Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom defense ministries, along with the United States Department of Defense, announced they would be providing Ukraine with air defense equipment.

The U.K. Ministry said the four allies would be providing Ukraine with high-priority air defense equipment, addressing its most urgent air defense requirements as Russia continues "its brazen missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities."

“The initiative will deliver hundreds of short and medium-range air defense missiles and associated systems required to protect Ukraine’s critical national infrastructure and further ensure the success of counter-offensive operations in coming months,” their statement continued. “Delivery of the equipment has already begun and should be complete within several weeks.”

Canada committed a $500 million package, Italy also announced its latest tranche of military assistance, while Norway and Germany announced multi-year packages, as did Denmark, United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said at a press conference after their meeting.

The U.S., over the last week or so, have announced two military aid packages to Ukraine, one meant to help them in the short term and another with long-term goals in mind.

Denmark and the Netherlands are leading a coalition of countries training Ukrainian pilots on fourth-generation fighter aircraft and they “shared the progress that they’ve made on [those plans],” Austin added.

The secretary reaffirmed their long-term commitment to Ukraine, explaining, "As President Biden has said, our support will not waver. Our resolve will not falter. And our unity will not crack. Make no mistake, and we will stand with Ukrainian Ukrainian people for as long as it takes."

Ukraine's long-awaited offensive began recently as they seek to reclaim occupied territory in the south and east. Kyiv has claimed to liberate some villages from Russian control over the last week or so, but there have been no large breakthroughs against Russian troops.

“Our heroic people, our troops on the front of the frontline are facing very tough resistance,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told NBC News, adding, the results on the front lines have been “generally positive, but it’s very difficult.”
