President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order Thursday at 4 p.m. that abolishes the Education Department’s powers.
The Trump administration has been teasing this order for weeks. The order will direct Education Department Secretary Linda McMahon to take “all necessary steps” to facilitate the department’s closing and move education to the states.

HOW TRUMP’S PROMISE TO ABOLISH THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION WOULD WORK
“We have spent more than $3 trillion at this federal bureaucracy. What has been the return on that investment for the American taxpayer?” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “Our children’s test scores are incredibly concerning when it comes to reading rates, literacy rates, math and science test scores,” she added. “This president is finally taking much-needed action to return education to where it belongs. And that’s to educators closest to students in their classrooms.”
Congress will need to approve the measure by a supermajority vote to abolish the Education Department. Trump’s executive order will very likely be challenged in court.
