Vice President Kamala Harris delivered remarks in Jacksonville, Florida, on Friday, responding to the passage of new curriculum standards for African American history, which critics claim "whitewash" American history.

Florida's Board of Education unanimously passed the new standards on Wednesday, which include teaching middle school students about skills that slaves developed that could have been beneficial to them.

Members of Florida's African American studies task force rejected the "whitewashing" criticism, claiming the new standards showed how some slaves still took advantage of certain opportunities instead of only showing slaves as victims of oppression.

“Any attempt to reduce slaves to just victims of oppression fails to recognize their strength, courage and resiliency during a difficult time in American history," members of the task force said in a statement. "Florida students deserve to learn how slaves took advantage of whatever circumstances they were in to better themselves and the community of African descendants."
