The tree lighting has been a tradition since 1923 when then-President Calvin Coolidge lit 2,500 light bulbs around the first National Christmas Tree, according to the National Park Service.
The previous National Christmas Tree, which was planted on Oct. 30, 2021, was replaced this year due to needle cast on Nov. 11, the NPS said in a release. Needle cast is a fungal disease that causes needles to turn brown and fall off.
