Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich slammed the appearance of the cast of Ted Lasso at a White House press briefing, calling it a display of “the absolute shallow behavior of the Biden administration.”
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre introduced the television comedy’s cast during Monday’s press briefing ahead of the group's meeting with President Joe Biden to discuss the importance of mental health.

“We are in a very dangerous situation,” Gingrich told Hannity. “We have two major international competitors, Russia and China, coming closer and closer together. We have a president who, clearly, does not have a clue of what to do. We have a vice president who is an embarrassment and the best possible insurance policy for keeping Biden as president.”
“Not only is the show a situation comedy, the Biden administration is a situation comedy,” Gingrich added. “That’s dangerous because the world is not a comedy.”
Gingrich noted his extreme concern for the present crises the United States faces, coupled with “a president who’s totally out of touch with reality in terms of what’s going on in the world.”
“Americans need to understand this is not a game. This is not one of those things where you get on Xbox. We’re in a real world, faced with real crises,” Gingrich said, pointing to China and Russia’s recent displays of power. “I personally, as a historian, think that this is the most dangerous period we have been in since Washington crossed the Delaware on Christmas night in 1776. The number of things going bad are so great and the threat to our civilization is so great that we really need a dramatic change.”
Gingrich suggested that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are “gangster allies [who represent] a totalitarian, dictatorship-led world where they take care of each other against the democracies” — much like Italy, Germany, and Japan leading up to World War II.
“Unlike the 1930s, we have a president dedicated to weakness, dedicated to confusion, and whose family — you just saw this last week — got $3 million from the Chinese communist in one check. There’s lots of other money out there,” the former Republican House speaker said.
“We have no idea how corrupt the Biden family is, but what we do know is that with an attorney general who’s as bitter, and as frankly dishonest, as the current attorney general, nothing is going to be done,” Gingrich continued, referencing Manhattan Democratic District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s possible indictment of Trump. “That’s a crisis itself. You have an American system in an enormous crisis with the news media that doesn’t want to cover the truth.”

The Ted Lasso cast appearance comes in connection with Biden’s focus on mental health as part of his "unity agenda,” as mentioned in his 2022 State of the Union address.
Biden stated that he aimed to "transform how mental health is understood, perceived, accessed, treated, and integrated — in and out of health care settings."
