"I know my parents loved me, but there were still very problematic things that I went through,” Kaepernick said. “I think it was important to show, 'No, this can happen in your own home.' And how do we move forward collectively while addressing the racism that is being perpetuated.”

Kaepernick, who has become best known for his national anthem protests, is biracial, having been born to a white mother but placed for adoption when his black father left them during the pregnancy. He was adopted by his white parents, Rick and Teresa Kaepernick.
The graphic novel details Kaepernick’s rise from high school athletics to NFL stardom, including arguments with his parents over their racism and ideas for him, including his hairstyles.
“He’s getting what rolls?” Kaepernick’s mother asks in the graphic novel, attacking his idea of cornrows to emulate former NBA star Allen Iverson.
His mother allegedly told him, “Oh, your hair’s not professional. Oh, you look like a little thug.”
Kaepernick noted that the experience has affected who he has become, saying it’s “why I have my hair long today.”
The former NFL quarterback said he sought community on the gridiron and outside his home due to the racial discord.

In addition to his graphic novel, Kaepernick has also worked with film director and producer Shelton “Spike” Lee on a documentary series for ESPN that he says will tell his real story.
Since becoming an NFL free agent in 2017 when he opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick said he still hopes to return to the game.
