Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg did his best to dodge and deflect Tuesday after he was asked about the consequences a default would have on summer air travel.

"I know it won't be good," Buttigieg said. "It's difficult to even fathom some of the implications."

REPUBLICANS RIP BIDEN FOR TRYING TO INSERT TAXES IN DEBT CEILING DEAL

"I think, honestly, the biggest thing I would be worried about is, uh, severe economic damage," he added.

The United States met its debt limit in January and must raise the debt ceiling or develop an alternative solution by June.

If Congress and President Joe Biden fail to come to a consensus and reach a solution, the nation risks defaulting on its loans for the first time in its history.

Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, school lunches, veteran programs, and myriad government-funded resources and programs are all at risk if a default occurs, and many in the nation are concerned about travel.

After he failed to specify the "implications" a default would bring to air travel, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, did his best to explain why air travelers across the country could be facing a crisis.

"Right now, a lot of the problems we have have arisen because demand came back so quickly, because the economy came back so quickly," he said.

"Passengers had the income and the inclination to get back to the skies year before most forecasters thought they would ... a default puts us in the opposite scenario," he added.
