Washington Nationals All-Star C.J. Abrams was demoted after reportedly pulling an all-nighter at a casino before the team’s game on Friday.

According to ESPN, the 23-year-old shortstop did not leave a Chicago-area casino until just hours before the Nationals were set to take on the Chicago Cubs. An X post from a Chicago Cubs podcaster said he was at the casino until 8 a.m., roughly six hours before the start of Friday’s game.

Abrams went 0-3 in that game with a walk and a strikeout.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said the reason for the demotion was not “performance-based,” despite Abrams struggling in the second half of the regular season, which ends next Sunday.

“I just want it to be known it wasn’t performance-based. It’s an internal issue. I’m not going to give specifics,” he said.

The demotion means Abrams will spend the rest of the season in West Palm Beach, Florida, where the Nationals’ minor league complex is located.

Abrams was selected as an All-Star this year after recording 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases in the first half of the season. Since then, he has struggled, finishing with a .203 batting average for the second half of the season.

The Nationals are slated to miss the playoffs for the fifth straight year after winning the World Series in 2019.
