The Washington Examiner's Sarah Bedford stated Wednesday that President Joe Biden's cognitive wellness is the "only thing" that both Democratic and Republican lawmakers agree on, given that many think Biden would be unable to fully serve a second term as president.

Biden, who will be 81 years old later this year, is running for reelection in the 2024 presidential election, though the problem of his age has been heavily discussed ahead of the next election, with some Democrats wanting a younger candidate such as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) to be the Democratic Party's 2024 nominee. While many lawmakers, especially Republicans, have said Biden is too old to be president, Bedford stated that the problem Biden faces going into 2024 is not his age, but rather his mental ability to serve in the role.

SEVEN UNANSWERED QUESTIONS FOR MERRICK GARLAND ABOUT THE BIDEN INVESTIGATIONS

"It's a really high-risk, low-reward situation for Gavin Newsom to get in now, even though Joe Biden's age isn't really questioned," Bedford said Wednesday. "It's the only thing Republicans and Democrats are united on, it's that he's really not cognitively able to carry out another term."

Biden addressed the concerns about his age when he spoke to donors on Monday, stating that "a lot of people" were focused on the topic. However, he claimed he was still optimistic about the future of the United States "than in the 800 years I’ve served."

While some Democrats have hinted that Newsom will launch a presidential campaign in 2024, he has repeatedly denied such claims and has reiterated his support for Biden's second term. He has also praised Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her the best candidate to serve as Biden's vice president in 2024.

“I want a guy who produces, and the results are in,” Newsom said of the Biden administration. “It’s been a master class. There’s simply no administration in my lifetime that’s been more effective, producing more substantive results, and we haven’t even started the campaign.”

Former President Donald Trump, who is running for president again in 2024, has stated that Biden is not too old to be president, but rather he is "grossly incompetent" for the position. Trump himself is only a few years younger than Biden at 77 years old.

Recent polling data indicate that Trump would narrowly beat Biden in 2024 by a few points, with Trump getting 44% of the vote from respondents against Biden's 40%. When running against Harris, Trump performed a little better at 46% compared to Harris's 40%, according to the most recent Harvard-Harris poll.
