Salena Zito said Tuesday that parents will not live through 2020 again, as the COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected families and their children's learning abilities.
Zito, a national political reporter for the Washington Examiner, said that parents want children to receive the best education, which was "stifled" due to lockdowns and restrictions implemented during the pandemic. Zito's comment comes as rumblings of another lockdown have emerged due to spikes in COVID-19 cases, with some places opting to bring back mask mandates.

"I will tell you this, they are not going to relive 2020 again," said Zito. "This is just will be unacceptable to parents, and if this becomes a thing again, I would really pay attention to parents’ reactions, no matter where they live, large cities, small towns. This will be a rallying cry that parents want to have power over."
Zito also noted that the Republican Party could take "a step forward" on this issue in opposing future lockdowns in next year's presidential election, as this issue is one that all parents, regardless of political affiliation, are in agreement on. Even though most people in the United States are not defined by their politics, Zito said, the year 2020 was one that was stressful for everyone.
"Their personal lives changed forever," said Zito. "They lost friends, they lost family members, not just to a disease, but also to the cultural impacts of the disease. Their jobs changed forever, their kids' lives changed forever."

Concerns about the possibility of another lockdown come after some schools have taken precautions against COVID-19, with a university in Georgia recently reinstating mask mandates and social distancing for two weeks. A pair of school districts in Kentucky also canceled classes for a few days last week due to a number of students and staff coming down with various respiratory illnesses.
In addition, multiple pharmacies have reported an uptick in sales of COVID-19 rapid test kits. Pharmacies reporting these increases in demand include CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid.
