Thousands of Barcelona residents marched in protest of mass tourism in the city over the weekend, some of them spraying diners in popular tourist areas with water pistols.

The fed-up protesters chanted, “Tourists go home,” carried placards reading, “Enough! Let’s put limits on tourism,” stopped in front of hotels, and sealed off restaurants with hazard tape.

Barcelona residents argue that the influx of tourists has led to increased living costs in Spain’s most visited city, which sees an average of 32 million visitors per year.

Local authorities say the cost of housing in Barcelona has risen 68% over the past decade, according to CBS News

“I have nothing against tourism, but here in Barcelona, we are suffering from an excess of tourism that has made our city unliveable,” one demonstrator told the French news agency Agence France-Presse.

“Local shops are closing to make way for stores that do not serve the needs of neighborhoods. People cannot afford their rents,” another resident said.

The protesters published a manifesto Saturday with 13 demands, including fewer cruise terminals, limits to tourist accommodations, and an end to the promotion of tourism with public money.

Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni said Saturday that he would reserve more than 10,000 tourist flats for residential use, increase taxes on tourists, and invest a portion of tourist revenue in public projects.

Other places in Europe have also placed restrictions on tourist activity in recent months. In April, Venice, Italy, became the first city in the world to charge day visitors a fee to enter, and Amsterdam banned the construction of new hotels.
