NextImg:Warren Davidson dismisses ‘America’s responsibility to rebuild Gaza’

Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) dodged a question about the United States’s role in helping Gaza recover amid the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

Israel is approaching two years in its fight against Hamas, which has largely taken place in Gaza following Hamas’s terrorist attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. While on CNN News Central Monday, Davidson responded to a question about U.S. involvement in Gaza.

“Well, I certainly don’t feel like it’s America’s responsibility to rebuild Gaza. But I think what President [Donald] Trump did is he secured pledges from other countries like Saudi Arabia to commit to help fund that redevelopment of Gaza,” Davidson said.

Davidson was referring to Trump’s promise from earlier this year that the U.S. will take ownership of Gaza and likely send troops to the area if “necessary.” Trump’s plans at the time included redeveloping the area to be the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

“The hard thing is who governs it — who can govern it — that people trust. How can you have a peaceful future in Gaza for the Palestinians who live there and, frankly, for their neighbors in Israel?” Davidson said.

The United Nations utilized satellite imagery to estimate that roughly 69% of the buildings in Gaza have suffered at least moderate damage. This estimate affects over 245,000 housing units in the city.

The conflict has resulted in the forced displacement of almost the entire population of over 2 million people, and the killing of about 55,000 combatants and civilians, some 3,000 of whom were killed since the most recent ceasefire ended in March, according to Hamas.
