Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears has criticized several school districts in the state for their refusal to adopt the state's guidance and policies regarding transgender students.

Fairfax County Public Schools, the largest district in Virginia, announced last week that it would not adopt Gov. Glenn Youngkin's (R-VA) policy, and it would continue its practice of using names and pronouns for children who say they are transgender. Earle-Sears, a major supporter of school choice, said Tuesday that the policies from the governor are not controversial and that parents' rights over their children "don't stop when they drop them off at the door and then when they pick them up again."

"The issue is the school boards are making themselves judge and jury, and they're again pushing education in their own image," Earle-Sears said during an appearance on Fox News's America Reports. "You hear them say, 'We have made a determination.' But actually, you are not following the law, and so something is going to have to happen."

Earle-Sears went on to state that the push for parental rights in education was what led her and Youngkin to victory in the state's 2021 elections and that a similar approach would be taken going forward in the state's elections this fall. The lieutenant governor added the Republican Party was planning to win back the state Senate so as to implement "more robust laws that really protect parents and their right."

Youngkin has also criticized FCPS's decision to disregard his policy on transgender students, which requires school facilities such as restrooms and locker rooms, as well as gender-specific activities such as sports, to be separated by the student's biological sex. FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid said in a message to district families that in addition to using the names and pronouns of transgender students, the district would also allow them to use restrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities that do not correspond to their sex.

"The law requires the Virginia Department of Education to provide model policies and requires school boards to adopt policies consistent with those provided by the Department," Youngkin spokeswoman Macaulay Porter told the Washington Examiner. "The Fairfax County Public Schools policies diverge from VDOE model policy guidance and perpetuate a false notion that FCPS knows what's better for a child than a child's parent."

Ahead of Virginia's elections this fall, as well as America's 2024 presidential elections, Youngkin has encouraged Republican voters to partake in early voting to win seats held by Democrats in both state houses and in Congress. Virginia Republicans are running early voting campaigns modeled on the success of their sister party in Georgia.
