Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has officially announced plans to seek reelection, ending speculation that he could run for governor next year.
Virginia governors are limited to serving only non-consecutive terms, meaning Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) is ineligible to seek reelection in 2025. While Miyares’s name had been included in discussions on who could succeed Youngkin as the Republican gubernatorial nominee, the attorney general announced Monday that he will instead run for reelection in his current role.
‘VERY SANE, VERY SOLID’ GLENN YOUNGKIN’S NEXT ACT IS STILL BEING WRITTEN
“Together, I know we can build a brighter future for every Virginian, and I will work hard to earn your trust for four more years,” Miyares said in a new video. “God bless America and the Commonwealth of Virginia we call home.”

As Attorney General, I’ve deployed every tool available to keep Virginians safe and violent criminals off our streets.

Miyares touted his record as attorney general over the last three years, including his work on Ceasefire Virginia, an initiative to decrease violent crime in the Commonwealth, as well as his fight to reduce fentanyl overdoses. The attorney general backed up his record by stating that both violent crime and overdoses have decreased under his leadership.

There are currently two Democratic candidates seeking to replace Miyares as attorney general, former Democratic state Del. Jay Jones and Shannon Taylor, Henrico County’s Commonwealth’s Attorney. Last week, Miyares deemed both “far-left, anti-police, criminal rights progressives” who would make Virginia “less safe.”
As of mid-November, the only candidate in Virginia’s Republican gubernatorial primary is Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who officially announced her bid in September. Meanwhile, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) is currently the only Democrat campaigning for the job.
