The population of homeless veterans reached a new low in 2024, according to the White House.

In the past year, the departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development oversaw a 7.5% reduction in homeless veterans.

Since 2010, the homeless veteran population dropped by 55.6%.

There are 32,882 military veterans who are homeless, and according to Jim Whaley, CEO of Mission Roll Call, a nonprofit organization that supports veterans, there should be no celebration until the number falls to zero.

“We should be striving for zero homelessness among veterans,” Whaley said. “And when they say it’s dropping at a certain percentage point, it shows to me, they’re not being audacious and bold in their goals, and they’re not really getting to the root of the problem. They’re just addressing the symptoms. Why are people, why are veterans being homeless? Why do veterans get on the path for suicide? Let’s get in front of that. And the fact of the matter is, we do a horrible job making sure that veterans transition to the civilian world.”

Although veterans account for just 7% of the generation population, they disproportionately consist of 15% of the homeless population.

The Biden administration shared in its press release on Monday that the VA has awarded $800 million in grants to house 48,000 veterans.

The VA also expanded access to legal assistance for military veterans and helped 158,000 veterans on the verge of foreclosure keep their homes. Nearly 90,000 veterans were able to receive a housing lease thanks to vouchers through HUD.

“Far too many of our nation’s veterans experience homelessness each year,” HUD Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman said in a statement. “And that is why HUD is laser-focused on ensuring that every veteran has a home.”
