(The Center Square) – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Dallas has released more details about two Venezuelan nationals who were both in the U.S. illegally and are connected to the murder of a north Texas teenager, Ava Moore.

The Grapevine Police Department took into custody 22-year-old Venezuelan Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, after her arrest in Dallas on felony manslaughter charges.

Moore, 18, was killed on Sunday while kayaking on Lake Grapevine, a reservoir roughly 20 miles northwest of Dallas. She had just graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School on May 19 and accepted her appointment to join the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Class of 2029. She was a graduate of Timber Creek High School in Ft. Worth, The Center Square reported.

Eyewitnesses saw two individuals on a jet ski strike Moore and flee the scene. A manhunt ensued. She and another Venezuelan national were arrested on Tuesday.

Gonzalez was identified as the driver of the jet ski, driving at a high-speed carrying a female passenger, authorities said. While speeding near the shoreline of Oak Grove Park, she collided with Moore’s kayak, allegedly causing Moore’s death, ICE said in a statement.

“Gonzalez fled the scene with her passenger on board” and both returned to Oak Grove Park, ICE said. “The passenger remained on the scene with witnesses and was interviewed by Grapevine Police Department while Gonzalez left in a vehicle with 21-year-old Maikel Coello Perozo, also of Venezuela,” ICE said.

Perozo was charged with hindering apprehension; more state charges may be filed against him as the investigation unfolds.

“This criminal alien and her boyfriend will account for the tragic accident that ended the life of a young woman who exhibited enormous potential,” ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Dallas acting Field Office Director Josh Johnson said. “ICE Dallas will remain steadfast in our commitment to arresting and removing criminal aliens who pose threats to the safety of our communities.”

ICE ERO Dallas lodged immigration detainers with the GPD for Gonzalez and Coello. Both have been placed in removal proceedings “pursuant to the policies of the Immigration and Nationality Act as aliens present without admission or parole,” ICE said.

“Our partnerships with law enforcement across jurisdictions are key during these types of investigations,” ICE Homeland Security Investigations Dallas Special Agent in Charge Travis Pickard said. “This investigation will continue to be driven by facts, evidence and a firm commitment to justice. The arrests of these two illegal aliens reflect the diligence and professionalism of our law enforcement team.”

ICE also confirmed that both Gonzalez and Coello illegally entered the country under the Biden administration in 2023. Gonzalez entered as a gotaway – a foreign national who intentionally illegally enters between ports of entry to evade capture. More than 2 million gotaways were reported under the Biden administration, The Center Square exclusively reported.

Coello illegally entered at a port of entry and was released into the country through Biden administration’s catch and release policy, a policy the Trump administration ended.

“On Sept. 28, 2023, Gonzalez illegally entered the United States without inspection or parole by an immigration officer,” ICE said, meaning she was a gotaway. She was later arrested the same day by Border Patrol agents. Instead of processing her for removal, they released her into the country on an order of recognizance with a Notice to Appear before a federal immigration judge on a date years into the future.

On Jan. 22, 2023, Coello arrived at the Camino Real Port of Entry, in Eagle Pass, Texas, “without authorization” and “was released pending an immigration hearing.” Instead of processing him for removal, CBP agents released him into the country as part of the Biden administration’s catch and release policy.

Multiple agencies are involved in the ongoing investigation: ICE ERO Dallas, Homeland Security Investigations Dallas, Texas Department of Wildlife, Grapevine Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Office of Attorney General, Dallas Police Department and Dallas U.S. Marshals office.
