Vice President JD Vance will visit the southern border on Wednesday for the first time since taking office.

The visit comes earlier in his first term than it did for his predecessor, former Vice President Kamala Harris, who traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border 4 1/2 months into her term. Former President Joe Biden chose Harris as his border czar, while President Donald Trump chose Tom Homan for border czar, not Vance.

“President Trump is keeping his promise to secure the border and bring safety BACK to America,” Vance wrote on X on Tuesday. “Tomorrow I’ll be visiting the southern border to highlight the incredible progress this administration has made thanks to his leadership.”

Vance will be joined by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who will make their first and second border visits, respectively, since being confirmed to the Cabinet. The delegation will meet in Eagle Pass, Texas, and visit Shelby Park, two epicenters of legal battles Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) fought with the Biden administration.

Eagle Pass saw buoys deployed in the Rio Grande to prevent crossings via its waters. At first, the Department of Justice issued an order to remove the marine barriers, only to be rebuffed by the governor, which led to a 2023 lawsuit. Abbott also faced a complaint related to the buoys from Mexico. Shelby Park is a greenspace that Abbott seized from federal authorities last year. It was a site where hundreds of national guardsmen were deputized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

As of February, there have been just over 8,300 encounters with migrants at the southwest border since the start of the year. This follows three years in which upward of 150,000 people attempted to cross.

According to Homan, the stark change happened during the first two days of the second Trump administration, when 766 apprehensions were reported on the southwest border. There were as many as 10,000 per day under the Biden administration.
