NextImg:Vance jokes about missing inauguration to see playoff final

Vice President-elect J.D. Vance hoped his alma mater would reschedule the College Football Playoff national championship game for his own inauguration.

Vance and President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated on Monday, the same day Ohio State will face off against Notre Dame for the national title. In 2009, Vance graduated summa cum laude from the university after studying political science and philosophy.

“Hopefully everyone is cool with me skipping the inauguration so I can go to the national title game,” Vance wrote over the weekend. He accompanied the post with a meme of a man sweating as he tries to decide between two buttons labeled “Attend your own inauguration” and “Go watch the Buckeyes win a national title.”

On Sunday, Vance made a public plea to change the game day while on Fox News Sunday.

“I really wish they could move the game until Tuesday,” Vance said. “If you’re watching this show and you have the power, I’d really like to watch the Buckeyes, and I don’t want to be at the inaugural ball staring at my phone because we’re watching Ohio State versus Notre Dame. So, let’s move that game. But if not, I’ll be rooting for the Buckeyes in spirit.”

Ohio State is the betting favorite to win the national championship. The Buckeyes did not win the Big Ten Conference despite a 10-2 record in the regular season but earned the No. 8 seed in the 12-team College Football Playoff. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish went 11-1 in the regular season and are the No. 7 seed.

The Fighting Irish have won 11 national championships while remaining independent from any collegiate conference. They have a decadeslong broadcast contract with NBC to air all of their home games, which has proven to be more financially beneficial than joining a conference.

Meanwhile, Washington is anticipating a cold Inauguration Day. Jan. 20 is the day every president has been inaugurated since 1937, in accordance with the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
