NextImg:Vance claps back at Newsom's Disneyland immigrant families criticism

Vice President JD Vance had a pointed response to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) latest jab that accused the second family of hypocrisy during a weekend trip to Disneyland amid immigration raids in California.

“Hope you enjoy your family time, @JDVance. The families you’re tearing apart certainly won’t,” Newsom posted on X Saturday, sharing video footage of Vance at Disneyland with second lady Usha Vance and two of their children.

Vance replied dryly: “Had a great time, thanks.”

Though described as a private family visit, Vance’s trip drew public attention and protest.

Roughly 150 demonstrators gathered outside Disneyland and the adjacent Grand Californian Hotel to denounce the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions. Some waved Mexican flags, while others chanted near the park gates.

Newsom continued his social media offensive, posting, “JD is back in California. He won’t take the time to debate and defend gutting our Medicaid system, taking away kids’ school meals, militarizing America’s streets, or adding trillions to the debt. Instead, he’s off to Disneyland. Probably to detain Mickey Mouse at this rate.”

The clash comes on the heels of two major ICE raids on July 10 targeting California marijuana farms, including Glass House Farms near Camarillo and another site in Carpinteria. Federal agents arrested over 200 individuals, prompting chaotic protests and multiple injuries. The Department of Homeland Security later confirmed that at least 10 unaccompanied migrant children were rescued during the operation, with potential evidence of child labor violations, human trafficking, and smuggling.

Notably, Glass House Farms — at the center of the federal investigation — was co-founded by Graham Farrar, a prominent Democratic donor. Federal Election Commission records show Farrar has donated thousands to California Democratic campaigns, including $10,000 to Newsom’s gubernatorial campaign in 2018.

While the vice president’s visit was not political in nature, Usha Vance used the opportunity to visit Camp Pendleton and read to children of active-duty Marines as part of her literacy initiative. The vice president, a Marine Corps veteran, also hiked with Marines stationed at the base during the weekend trip.

The weekend dust-up is the latest flare-up in an escalating feud between Newsom and the Trump-Vance administration over immigration policy. With Newsom seen as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender and Vance widely expected to lead the Republican ticket, the political rivalry may only be heating up.
