The guided-missile destroyer USS Thomas Hudner shot down a drone that a U.S. Central Command spokesperson said originated from Yemen and was heading toward the ship.

The drone involved in the attack on Wednesday was headed toward the USS Thomas Hudner, unlike an incident last month in which a U.S. destroyer shot down drones and missiles fired toward Israel.

"The USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116) engaged a drone that originated from Yemen and was heading in the direction of the ship," a U.S. Central Command spokesperson told the Washington Examiner. "The drone was destroyed, and there were no U.S. casualties."

The official did not attribute responsibility or ownership of the drone to any party, but the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen threatened to attack ships in the Red Sea just days ago.

The incident came a week after Houthi rebels in Yemen shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Red Sea.

U.S. forces have not yet responded to either attack. Deputy Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh disagreed on Tuesday with the assessment that their lack of response is "inviting more aggressive or further response from the Houthis" because "we've seen the Houthis do this before. We've seen one of our MQ-9s shot down before in the past."

"I'm not saying that we're not going to respond. We always reserve the right to respond at a time and place of our choosing. But I just don't have anything to forecast for you right now," she added. "I mean, as you know, our main goal is to contain and to make sure this conflict is contained within Gaza. Right now, that's where we see it."

The U.S. surged troops to the Middle East over the last five weeks as Israel responded to the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks, the most deadly attacks in the country's history. The heightened military presence, defense officials have said, is an attempt to deter adversaries from getting involved in the war between Israel and Hamas, which would expand the conflict.

The war has largely been contained to Israel and Hamas, though there is also heightened tension between Israel and Hezbollah, the more sophisticated terrorist group based in Lebanon, but U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria have come under attack more than 50 times since Oct. 17.
