A viral video that supposedly shows an immigrant admitting he and others illegally voted for Vice President Kamala Harris was actually Russian disinformation.
U.S. intelligence officials determined Russian “influence actors” were behind the video, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency jointly announced on Friday.
The video shows a man claiming he and others in the video are from Haiti, have been in the U.S. for six months, obtained citizenship, and are now voting for Harris in multiple counties. He said in the video, “Yesterday, we voted in Gwinnett County, and today we’re voting in Fulton County,” adding, “We have all our documents, driver’s license. We invite all Haitians to come to America and bring families.”
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger called the video “obviously fake and part of a disinformation effort” and said it was “likely” a “product of Russian troll farms.”
The ODNI, FBI, and CISA said they expect Russian disinformation operations to continue as Election Day approaches and that they could capitalize on any distrust in the election outcomes.
“This Russian activity is part of Moscow’s broader effort to raise unfounded questions about the integrity of the U.S. election and stoke divisions among Americans, as detailed in prior ODNI election updates,” their statement continued.
Previously, Russian disinformation actors have been responsible for viral videos with false allegations of inappropriate behavior by Democratic Party presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN). In one example, Walz was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student, though the intelligence community quickly determined it to be Russian disinformation.
