The United States closed its embassy in Ukraine’s capital on Wednesday after it received threats of a “significant air attack.”
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv said the announcement came “out of an abundance of caution” in a security alert, warned U.S. citizens to shelter “immediately” in the event of an air alert expected Nov. 20, and directed employees to shelter in place.

The escalated tensions in the Eastern European country come after President Joe Biden, for the first time, authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied missiles, called ATACMS, against Russia on Sunday. Russia reported six were fired from Ukraine toward the Bryansk region on Tuesday, all of which were intercepted or damaged before reaching their targets. If true, the strike would be the first time a country has carried out that kind of attack with U.S.-provided weapons.
The U.S.’s move to authorize Ukraine to blast long-range missiles into Russian territory triggered Russian President Vladimir Putin to revise his nuclear doctrine on Tuesday. The Kremlin can now justify a nuclear strike if subject to an attack by a nonnuclear country, such as Ukraine, that is supported by a nuclear country, such as the U.S.
