NextImg:US claims Russian military has executed soldiers who refuse orders in Ukraine

Russian forces have allegedly executed troops who have refused to follow orders regarding the war in Ukraine, according to the Biden administration.

Throughout Russia's war in Ukraine, which has gone on for nearly 20 months, Russian leaders have shown a disregard for the lives of its forces by not training them and providing them with the necessary resources to succeed on the battlefield, National Security Council coordinator John Kirby told reporters on Thursday.

"Russia continues to show no regard for the lives of its soldiers," he said. "We believe they have suffered thousands of casualties in their effort to conduct this offensive, some of them on the orders of their own leaders. We have information that the Russian military has been actually executing soldiers who refuse to follow orders. We also have information that Russian commanders are threatening to execute entire units."

"They seek to retreat from Ukrainian artillery fire. Russia's mobilized forces remain undertrained, underequipped, and unprepared for combat," he added. "The Russian military appears to be using what we would call human wave tactics, just throwing masses of these poorly trained soldiers right into the fight, no proper equipment, no leadership, no resources, no support."

Kirby called the actions "barbaric" and "reprehensible."

"I think it's a symptom of how poorly Russia's military leaders know they're doing and how bad they have handled this from a military perspective from the very beginning," he added. "We've been talking about poor command and control, poor logistics and sustainment. They can't feed their guys in the field, for crying out loud. And now, again, they're willing to shoot them for not following orders."

The administration also announced its latest $150 million aid package for Ukraine.
