NextImg:University of Idaho murders: House demolished despite opposition from victims' families

The house where four University of Idaho students were murdered last year has been demolished despite the victims' families pushing to delay the destruction.

Last November, Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Xana Kernodle were found murdered at a rental house at 1122 King Road, Moscow, across the street from the University of Idaho campus. The private owner of the six-bedroom, three-bathroom house gave the property to the university early this year, and it was scheduled to be torn down.

Heavy equipment works to demolish the final pieces of the foundation of the house where four University of Idaho students were killed in 2022 on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, in Moscow, Idaho.

Two of the victims’ families asked the university and the prosecutor’s office to hold off on tearing down the house until after the trial of the suspected killer, Bryan Kohberger. Kohberger, 29, was a criminology graduate student from Washington State University and is facing four counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of University of Idaho students.

The Goncalves and Kernodle families pleaded Wednesday night before the demolition for it to be paused until after the trial, arguing it comes with the risk that evidence could be destroyed.

“We feel that the University of Idaho and the Court has put us in a horrible position to have to voice our opinions,” a statement on Facebook from the Goncalves family said. “We all along have just wanted the King Rd. Home to not be demolished and for us to have a trial date so that we can look forward to justice being served.”

A petition, which gathered over 10,000 signatures, was posted on Change.org seeking to “halt the demolition of the King Road house until after trial,” and one petitioner identified herself as Cara Kernodle, Xana Kernodle’s mother.

“My daughter was murdered in that house and there is no way they should be destroying any evidence,” the comment said.

The Chaplin family said they supported the university’s decision in a statement to ABC News.

“We’re supportive of the decision to take down the King Street House — for the good of the University, its students (including our own kids), and the community of Moscow,” the family wrote.

Jodi Walker, executive director of communications for the University of Idaho, said removing the property will help students living in the area move forward, per Northwest Public Broadcasting. Now that the home has been leveled, crews will plant grass over the area, but there are no other plans for the permanent future of the site.
