NextImg:Uncertainty hangs over 2024 presidential debates after schedule announced

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced the dates and locations for three general election presidential debates on Monday, yet it remains to be seen whether the eventual nominees will participate.

The nonpartisan and nonprofit group revealed its choices of Texas State University, Virginia State University, and the University of Utah, with the events to be held next year on Sept. 16, Oct. 1, and Oct. 9, respectively.

Virginia State University would be the first historically black college or university to host a presidential debate. A fourth debate hosting the vice presidential nominees will also be held on Sept. 25 at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania.

"The United States’ general election debates, watched live worldwide, are a model for many other countries: the opportunity to hear and see leading candidates address serious issues in a fair and neutral setting. This tradition remains unbroken since 1976. In 2024, students at our four debate sites will help bring another set of historic conversations to audiences here and abroad," CPD Co-Chairs Frank Fahrenkopf and Antonia Hernandez said in a statement.

Additional details, such as the format and moderators, won't be announced until closer to the events, but the commission did reveal that each is set to begin at 9 p.m. and will last 90 minutes with no commercials.

It is more unclear than ever, however, if the debates will actually happen. President Joe Biden has not committed to participate, nor has former President Donald Trump, the odds-on favorite to challenge him in the general election.

Biden's campaign did not provide comment to the Washington Examiner. Meanwhile, Trump is looking forward to debating Biden, according to a campaign adviser, but has not commented on the commission's debate schedule specifically.

Its prospects are made all the more difficult given that the Republican National Committee voted unanimously last year to withdraw from the commission and bar its candidates from taking part in its events.

The RNC said the group refused to make requested changes, accusing it of bias. “Debates are an important part of the democratic process. … We are going to find newer, better debate platforms to ensure that future nominees are not forced to go through the biased CPD in order to make their case to the American people,” RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in 2022.

Two of the RNC's demands for the commission had been to hold the events before the start of early voting and “selecting moderators who have never worked for candidates on the debate stage.”

The campaigns for former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) did not provide comment to the Washington Examiner as to whether each candidate would participate in CPD debates if nominated.

The commission was first established in 1987, and since then, each general election presidential and vice presidential debate has been sponsored and produced by it. As a nonprofit organization, the commission does not receive government funds. It also doesn't receive money from parties or campaigns in order to maintain its nonpartisan status.
