Police at the University of North Carolina have declared the situation all clear after an armed and dangerous suspect was arrested close to campus.

After an hourslong lockdown, police declared the situation all clear. Police later confirmed that one faculty member had been killed.

Law enforcement and first responders gather on South Street near the Bell Tower on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus in Chapel Hill, N.C., Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, after a report of an "armed and dangerous person" on campus.

"All clear. All clear. Resume normal activities," UNC Police announced on X, the social media outlet formerly known as Twitter.

In a press conference, UNC leaders and police confirmed the arrest of the suspect, but they did not say how or if the shooter and victim knew each other. They added that classes were canceled for the rest of Monday and Tuesday.

The university's alert system said students should avoid Caudill Labs, the location of the killing, as confirmed at the press conference.

Police revealed that a false arrest had been made over the course of the investigation, saying it happened because a man matched the description of the suspect and was in the same area.

Police are still searching for the gun used in the shooting. They were unable to say whether or not it was legally obtained.

The Washington Examiner has reached out to UNC, Chapel Hill.

Police released a photo of the suspect, asking students to avoid him and to call 911 if they see him.

A WRAL reporter said the situation prompted a heavy police response, with over half a dozen police cars making their way toward the campus.
