A woman in Ukraine was arrested by Ukraine’s Security Service, the service said Monday, for a role in an alleged plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky during his trip to Mykolaiv, Ukraine, last week.
The country's law enforcement branch claimed the woman, who has not been named, was "caught red-handed" when giving information to the Russians that included Zelensky's full itinerary. If the plan had gone through, an airstrike would have been ordered by Russia, which they hoped would kill Zelensky, according to ABC News.

The woman had also allegedly taken photographs and video of defense systems and ammunition warehouses throughout the Ochakov region.
The security service stated that it was given prior notice of the planned attempt, and Zelensky took additional security measures during his trip to the area.
“The Ukrainian Security Service continued to document the criminal actions of the enemy accomplice in order to obtain new data about her Russian ‘curators’ and the tasks received,” officials said in a news release Monday.
Zelensky confirmed that he was briefed on the planned attack in a post to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
"The Main Intelligence Directorate and the Foreign Intelligence Service provided the data received from Russia. We understand the enemy's immediate plans. Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Malyuk reported on the struggle against traitors in Ukraine," Zelensky posted.

Last week's planned attack was not the first time someone allegedly tried to assassinate the Ukrainian president. Around the outbreak of Russia's war in Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine said Zelensky had survived more than a dozen assassination attempts by that March.
Ukrainian officials said an investigation into the assassination plot is underway, and the female suspect is still being questioned. However, if she is convicted of treason, she could face up to 12 years in prison under Ukrainian law.
