A Ukrainian minister of parliament detonated three grenades at a city council meeting, injuring 26 people, police said Friday.

Deputy Serhiy Batryn, a member of President Volodymyr Zelensky's Servant of the People Party, entered a Keretsky Village Council meeting in Ukraine’s western Transcarpathia Oblast on Friday, asking to speak but was ignored. He casually took three grenades out of his pockets, pulled out the safety pins, and tossed them on the ground. Three explosions rang out, followed by screams and cries of the wounded.

In this photo provided by the Ukrainian Police Press Office, blood is seen at the scene of an incident with exploded grenades in Keretske, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine, on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023. A village council member in western Ukraine detonated three hand grenades during a meeting Friday, critically injuring himself and at least two dozen other people, authorities said.

One woman can be heard saying that she can't walk.

"Today at 11:37, the police received a report that a deputy set off grenades in the building of the Keretsky Village Council of the Mukachevo district during the session," the Ukrainian National Police said in a Telegram post.

"According to preliminary information, one person, the detonator himself, died as a result of the explosion, and 11 more people were injured," the police added.

However, a later post said that the culprit was resuscitated and is still alive. The number of injured people was updated to 26, six of them seriously.

The investigative and operational teams of the police and explosives and forensics experts are investigating the scene.

The Telegram channel Zakarpattya24 reported that Batryn had a long-standing feud with village chief Mikhail Mushka, and had particularly taken issue with the decision to give him a 50% raise during the war. Before leaving to apparently grab the grenades, Batryn demanded that the 2023 budget be made public, but he failed to convince his colleagues.
