Kyiv is looking to begin exporting some of the weapons it honed in its fight against Russia before the war ends.

The war in Ukraine has seen some of the most rapid advancements in tactics and weapons in recent history, with Kyiv and Moscow racing to outdo each other. With no end to the war in sight, Ukraine is looking to begin exporting some of its locally produced weaponry.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that plans for partial arms exports will be presented on Sept. 29, according to RBC-Ukraine. He reasoned that the money raised from the exports of some surplus weapons would allow Ukraine to purchase more needed weapons.

“During a war, no one wants to take risks, but we need money to produce certain very necessary types of weapons, like drones for the front. So, I think so: In about 10 days, we will have a concept for exports,” Zelensky told reporters.

He specifically cited the country’s advanced naval drones, which inflicted serious damage on the Russian Black Sea Fleet, as surplus weapons it could export.

“Ukraine can produce much more naval drones than our own needs. This suggests that either we are reducing production capabilities, or we are providing the opportunity to sell exactly the quantity that we can,” he added.

“We have some high-quality weapons; there is a surplus and the ability to produce them. It is unreasonable to give money for this when we have a deficit. But we do not want to reduce production,” Zelensky concluded.

Ukraine developed and produced the Maritime Autonomous Guard Unmanned Robotic Apparatus V-type, or MAGURA V5, to contest Russia’s naval dominance of the Black Sea. These vessels primarily targeted Russian warships in and around Moscow’s main port of Sevastopol in Crimea. After a series of successful attacks, Russia moved most of its fleet to more secure ports in the Caucasus, stripping the naval drones of most targets.

With the focus back on the land war, where Russia enjoys a clear superiority in drone development and production, Ukraine is looking to sell some of these dormant naval drones to purchase more drones for use on the battlefield.

Zelensky said these exports will only go to countries that have assisted Ukraine during the current war.

“Ukraine will not engage in ‘gun charity’ — helping those who don’t care about Ukraine,” he said.

Russia has developed its own kamikaze naval drones, with one striking Ukraine’s Simferopol reconnaissance ship in the Danube delta last month. It was one of the Ukrainian navy’s few remaining ships.
