Pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of California, Los Angeles, fortified their encampment in preparation for a storming by a large force of police officers.
Just one day after the New York Police Department dramatically stormed a pro-Palestinian protester encampment at Columbia University, a similar scene is playing out at UCLA. On Wednesday evening, the UCLA Police Department, backed by the Los Angeles Police Department and other security forces, declared that the encampment was unlawful and must be dispersed. Protesters appear to have no intention of doing so, fortifying their encampment with wooden planks and bringing in hundreds more protesters as backup.
ABC 7 reporter Chris Christi said that over one thousand protesters had gathered to defend the camp, opposed by hundreds of police officers with riot gear and tactical vehicles.
Protesters, wary of the easy dispersal of Columbia’s tent camp, surrounded their’s with a wall of wood pallets and plywood, bound together with zip ties and drilled screws.
Protesters appear to have anticipated the move, as hours beforehand aerial footage from Christi saw stocks of personal protective equipment, helmets, gas masks, goggles, umbrellas, paint, plywood, and other riot gear.
Sometime before 8 P.M. local time, prison buses were spotted outside the campus, mirroring scenes at Columbia on Tuesday.
Also around 8 p.m., the LAPD issued a citywide tactical alert, as large numbers of police in riot gear gathered outside the encampment.
Shortly after, the UCLA Palestine Solidarity encampment announced on its Telegram its intention to hold the police “all night.” Other posts discussed tactics dealing with police, ordering frontline protesters to wear gas masks and to rotate their forces.
A source familiar with the matter told CNN that several different agencies coordinated to formulate a plan to clear the encampment. The LAPD was tasked with securing the perimeter, the California Highway Patrol was tasked with entering the encampment, and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department was tasked with crowd control.
Footage from the encampment showed protesters constructing impromptu shields and bracing against the barricades. Protesters wore hard helmets and gas masks.

Aerial footage from Christi showed dozens of police vehicles waiting outside the encampment.
A violent clash took place between protesters and counter-protesters on Tuesday night, drawing national attention and pushing UCLA to cancel all classes on Wednesday and Thursday.
Skirmishes between protesters and law enforcement officials were reported all through the night. At least 150 California Highway Patrol officers arrived in riot gear to UCLA early Thursday morning.
