NextImg:Twitch reverses 'artistic nudity' policy after backlash

The game streaming service Twitch reversed its decision to allow streamers to show "artistic nudity" on the platform.

Twitch initially announced Wednesday that it would allow certain forms of sexual content on its platform, including breasts, buttocks, pelvic regions, fictionalized female bodies, body writing, and erotic dances, which it considered artistic nudity. The company reversed the position on Friday, stating that the policy "caused confusion."

"Effective today, we are rolling back the artistic nudity changes," Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said in a web post. "Moving forward, depictions of real or fictional nudity won't be allowed on Twitch, regardless of the medium."

Creators went on to create content that violated the new policy, Clancy stated. They also made content within the guidelines but attracted "community concern."

"Upon reflection, we have decided that we went too far with this change," Clancy said. "Digital depictions of nudity present a unique challenge–AI can be used to create realistic images, and it can be hard to distinguish between digital art and photography."

The specific mention of artificial intelligence appears to be in reference to the allegation that AI could be used to generate deepfakes, or AI-generated replicas of real people, under the company's artistic nudity policy.

Twitch's initial change allowed artistic nudity so long as a broadcast was tagged with an appropriate Content Classification Label, ensuring that minors and those uninterested were not exposed to adult content.

The policy will not change Twitch's prohibition of video games "featuring nudity, pornography, sex or sexual violence as a core focus or feature." It will allow mature games to be broadcast based on the Entertainment Software Rating Board's rating system.
