TurboTax users who have used the service in recent years are set to receive some settlement money sometime over the next few weeks.

The $141 million settlement is being distributed after New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the settlement that Intuit, TurboTax's owner, agreed to last year. Under the settlement, Intuit agreed to suspend TurboTax’s “free, free, free” ad campaign, which misled consumers to believe TurboTax's services would be free and also agreed to pay $141 million in restitution to the consumers who were unfairly charged, according to a press release from James's office.

“TurboTax’s predatory and deceptive marketing cheated millions of low-income Americans who were trying to fulfill their legal duties to file their taxes,” James said. “Today, we are righting that wrong and putting money back into the pockets of hardworking taxpayers who should have never paid to file their taxes. I thank my fellow attorneys general for their partnership in this effort to stand up for ordinary Americans and hold companies who cheat consumers accountable.”

All 50 states and the District of Columbia agreed to Intuit's settlement.

Eligible consumers for this settlement will be contacted by email, and the checks for the settlement will be mailed throughout the month. The first batch of checks is expected to be issued starting next week, and those eligible only have to wait for their check to arrive without filing a claim.

To be eligible for this settlement, consumers had to have paid to file their federal tax returns through TurboTax for the tax years 2016, 2017, and 2018 and were eligible to file for free through the Internal Revenue Service's Free File Program.

The settlements will be worth anywhere between $29 and $85. Most eligible for this settlement are expected to receive either $29 or $30, though individuals who filed for three consecutive years could get up to $85.
