The Office of Personnel Management issued a memo last week reminding federal agencies that they have the authority to approve “workforce flexibilities” such as remote work or approve days off.

“It is anticipated that beginning on Wednesday … preparations for the celebration may cause significant impacts to vehicular traffic and commute times in Washington, DC,” the memo said.

Security is expected to be increased across the district.

“This is a significant event with a large footprint,” D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said Monday.

Festival attendees on Saturday will have to go through security checkpoints, and 18.5 miles of security fencing will be erected across the district. Security officials will also use drones as part of the security strategy, and waterways around the district will be closed.
