President-elect Donald Trump wished House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) “good luck” in Friday’s vote for him to retain his leadership of the chamber.
“Good luck today for Speaker Mike Johnson, a fine man of great ability, who is very close to having 100% support,” Trump wrote on social media.
“A win for Mike today will be a big win for the Republican Party, and yet another acknowledgment of our 129 year most consequential Presidential Election!! — A BIG AFFIRMATION, INDEED. MAGA!” Trump continued.
Trump had previously endorsed Johnson as the speaker’s political future in the leadership post appeared shaky.
Last month, a number of House Republicans voted against a bipartisan deal to continue funding the government through March, effectively killing the legislation. House Democrats ended up supplying the needed votes to keep the government open, voting in favor of a slimmed down version.
Republicans are expected to enter the 119th Congress with just a one-seat majority, with Republicans in control 219-215. With that slim majority, Johnson can only afford to lose two votes in Friday’s election, and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is already firmly voting “no” on retaining Johnson.
“You can pull all my fingernails off, you can shove bamboo up them, you can start cutting off my fingers, I am not voting for Mike Johnson tomorrow,” Massie said. “And you can take that to the bank.”

Newly elected House Republicans appear willing to back Johnson’s reelection. Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) also said he is unaware of anyone else besides Massie who is not backing Johnson.
“I haven’t seen any directly. So you know, Mike’s been talking to everybody,” he said.
