Former President Donald Trump offered to send Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) in his place to a prominent event among Iowa conservatives due to a "scheduling conflict."

The Family Leadership Summit will take place on Friday, and each of the key players in the Republican primary race will be in attendance — with the exception of Trump.

According to Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung, "President Trump was in Iowa last week and will be back next week. Unfortunately there is a scheduling conflict and the President will be in Florida this weekend headlining the premier national young voter conference with Turning Point Action conference while DeSantis is nowhere to be found."

The former president is speaking on Saturday evening at the Turning Point Action Conference in West Palm Beach, Florida.

In a statement to the Washington Examiner, president and CEO of the Family Leader Bob Vander Plaats confirmed, "Yes, they did reach out to me and graciously offered JD Vance as a surrogate for President Trump."

"Our policy has always been to decline surrogates or video presentations for our Summits. The Trump representative accepted and appreciated our rationale," he added.

The summit will be attended by fellow 2024 Republican candidates Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former Vice President Mike Pence, Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

Campaigns for Pence, Haley, Ramaswamy, and Scott did not provide comment.

According to DeSantis campaign spokesman Andrew Romeo, "President Trump continues to be his own worst enemy in Iowa."

Popular Iowa talk show host Steve Deace doesn't think this will go over well with Iowa Republicans. “I can’t ever recall any candidate sending a surrogate on his behalf to this event, because candidates know the importance of getting in front of the largest audience of activists assembled prior to the Iowa Caucus," he said.

"Trump knew this himself back in 2015," he recalled, "which is why he was there when he wasn’t the polling leader at the time, but perhaps he now thinks he’s bigger than the process and doesn’t have to show up.”

This comes on the heels of Trump's now-public feud with Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) over her commitment to remaining neutral throughout the campaign season up until the presidential caucuses.

Some have already predicted that the rift between the Iowa governor and Trump might come back to bite the former president because of how popular Reynolds is among Republicans in the state. However, it all depends on how much of the information surrounding the fight gets to voters.
