President Donald Trump credited the National Guard on Sunday for settling the protests against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in California.

Trump issued a presidential memorandum Saturday night to send 2,000 National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area amid the demonstrations. Law enforcement has arrested protesters for unlawful assembly and assault on peace officers in some cases.

While commending the National Guard’s response, Trump criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their lack of leadership.

“Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest. We have an incompetent Governor (Newscum) and Mayor (Bass) who were, as usual (just look at how they handled the fires, and now their VERY SLOW PERMITTING disaster. Federal permitting is complete!), unable to to handle the task,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The president referred to the construction permits to rebuild the homes in Los Angeles that burned in the wildfires earlier this year. Newsom suspended the Environmental Quality Act and the California Coastal Act from enforcing standards that would delay construction.

“These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED,” Trump went on. “Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why??? Again, thank you to the National Guard for a job well done!”

However, Bass noted that the National Guard was not in Los Angeles.

“I want to thank LAPD and local law enforcement for their work tonight. I also want to thank @GovernorNewsom for his support,” Bass wrote on X Sunday. “Just to be clear, the National Guard has not been deployed in the City of Los Angeles.”

Protesters were largely centered in Paramount, California, roughly 15 miles south of Los Angeles. Still, the Los Angeles Police Department has delineated an area of unlawful assembly in downtown LA that is still in effect. Police have surrounded the Metropolitan Detention Center and pledged to arrest anyone who approaches on foot or in a vehicle.

The Washington Examiner reached the White House for comment.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed Newsom “has done nothing to stop this violence.”

“He should be thanking President Trump for bringing law and order to California — a basic value that Newsom and his fellow Democrats have failed to uphold,” Leavitt wrote on X Saturday.

According to ICE, “officers are facing a 413% increase in assaults while carrying out arrests.” This statistic was shared after Friday’s arrest of 45 immigrants in the area, but before the protests began.
