NextImg:Trump taps Susan Monarez for CDC director

President Donald Trump announced Monday that he nominated Susan Monarez to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, following her tenure as acting director of the public health agency since January.

Monarez was selected a little more than a week after Trump’s initial pick for the position, former Republican congressman and physician Dave Weldon, was withdrawn because of a suspected lack of support in the Senate for his confirmation due to his skepticism of vaccines.

“As an incredible mother and dedicated public servant, Dr. Monarez understands the importance of protecting our children, our communities, and our future,” Trump wrote on social media.

Monarez is not a medical doctor, but holds a doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and had postdoctoral training in microbiology and immunology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Trump said Monarez “brings decades of experience championing Innovation, Transparency, and strong Public Health Systems.”

The president also said she would work with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to restore the confidence lost in the agency “due to political bias and disastrous mismanagement.”

“Together, they will prioritize Accountability, High Standards, and Disease Prevention to finally address the Chronic Disease Epidemic and, MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN,” Trump wrote.

Monarez was an atypical pick for acting director at CDC, an agency that usually promotes from within.

Before being tapped for the acting directorship, Monarez served as the deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, a biomedical research agency within HHS tasked with funding research that is unorthodox but not commercially viable.

Monarez is likely to face a range of questions from senators on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee regarding her tenure as the acting CDC director.

She will be the first CDC director to face a Senate confirmation hearing following legislative reforms to the agency due to CDC failures with respect to COVID-19 policy.

Among other things, Monarez has been involved in decisions to cut the CDC’s workforce in Atlanta, delay vaccine advisory meetings, and lay plans for researching links between vaccines and autism.

Monarez will also likely need to address the rising cases of measles in undervaccinated communities, the possible concern for increasing rates of tuberculosis, and mitigation strategies for a bird flu outbreak among humans.
