President Donald Trump said on Sunday he “would certainly imagine” the Justice Department is investigating former FBI Director Christopher Wray.
“I would imagine. I would certainly imagine. I would think they are doing that,” Trump told NBC News during an interview.

Concerns that Wray weaponized the agency against Republicans during his tenure as director have risen in recent weeks. Controversy stems partly from allegations that Wray authorized FBI agents to be in the crowd at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and accusations that he unfairly targeted nearly 100 conservative groups, including the late Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA, for government scrutiny in the “Arctic Frost” investigation.
Trump has zeroed in on the Jan. 6 allegations, telling NBC over the weekend he believes Wray’s actions were “very inappropriate.”
“And I think a lot of his service was very inappropriate. But we haven’t gone beyond that. Don’t forget, we just found out about all of these FBI agents being there,” the president said.
Speculation over the FBI’s involvement in Jan. 6 surged earlier this month in reaction to a Just the News report alleging the agency “deployed” 274 agents in the crowd that day. The 274 personnel in the crowd were part of a larger law enforcement effort to curb violence at the Capitol, not to “stage” the riot, as officials such as Kari Lake have alleged.
In December 2024, an inspector general report concluded there were more than two dozen FBI informants in the crowd, while stressing only three were assigned by the agency to be present, and no individuals were “authorized or directed by the bureau to ‘break the law’ or ‘encourage others to commit illegal acts.’”
DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz said there were a total of 26 confidential human sources in the crowd outside the Capitol. One of the three confidential human sources tasked by the FBI to attend entered the Capitol building, while the other two entered the restricted area around the Capitol. The other 23 FBI informants who traveled to Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6 did not do so at the agency’s direction, according to Horowitz’s report.
“Our review determined that none of these FBI CHSs was authorized by the FBI to enter the Capitol or a restricted area or to otherwise break the law on January 6, nor was any CHS directed by the FBI to encourage others to commit illegal acts on January 6,” the report read.
In 2023, Wray denied any nefarious activity as he testified before a congressional committee.

“If you are asking if the violence at the Capitol was part of some operation orchestrated by FBI sources or agents, the answer is no,” he said.
FBI Director Kash Patel said on Saturday the agents “were sent into a crowd control mission after the riot was declared by Metro Police.” During an interview with Fox News Digital, he criticized the move as violating “FBI standards,” alleging “corrupt leadership” had “lied to Congress and to the American people about what really happened.”
