Two days after securing the U.S. presidency in a dominating fashion, President-elect Donald Trump called Russian President Vladimir Putin to advise him not to escalate the war in Ukraine and express an interest in future conversations to discuss “the resolution of Ukraine’s war soon.”

According to a Washington Post report, Trump and Putin talked about the desire for peace in Europe more broadly, with Trump reminding him of the U.S.’s military capabilities in the continent.

Ukrainian officials were aware of the call taking place and did not object to it, the report noted.

The call with Putin follows a call Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, one which Elon Musk was a part of. A Ukrainian official described that call as “very pleasant.” Zelensky also met with Trump in person in September at Trump Tower in New York.

Trump has pledged to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, a conflict that has continued for nearly three years, in the first 24 hours of his presidency. Some proposals allegedly being floated by his team include a freeze on military engagements and establishing an 800-mile demilitarized zone between Ukraine and Russia similar to the area separating North Korea and South Korea.

Ukraine would likely object to such a plan, as it has made clear it will not give up territory to Russia in peace negotiations. Zelensky also unveiled a “victory plan” of his own, part of which hinges on permission from Western weapon suppliers to allow long-range strikes on military targets deep in Russian territory. The plan would also require Ukrainian acceptance into NATO.

Trump told NBC News on Thursday that he has spoken with 70 world leaders since the election, including three calls with Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, which is engaged in a conflict of its own in the Middle East involving various Iranian terror proxies in the region.
