NextImg:Trump slams ‘highly conflicted’ Boasberg for taking on Signal leak case - Washington Examiner

President Donald Trump suggested the judicial system is “rigged” against him after a federal judge, who recently ruled against the White House’s effort to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members, was assigned to a case scrutinizing the administration over the Signal group chat leak.

Judge James Boasberg, an Obama appointee and chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, was assigned on Wednesday to oversee a lawsuit against senior Trump administration officials who were accused of illegally using an unauthorized system to send war plans. The assignment was made at random, according to Boasberg’s chambers.

The judge’s latest assignment came after he recently issued a nationwide injunction blocking Trump’s plan to deport suspected members of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang, through the invocation of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. 

The president argued on Truth Social on Thursday morning that Boasberg’s assignment to those two cases, and others involving his administration, was “statistically impossible.” Trump also called for an immediate investigation of “this rigged system.” 

“How disgraceful is it that ‘Judge’ James Boasberg has just been given a fourth ‘Trump Case,’ something which is, statistically, IMPOSSIBLE,” the president wrote. “He is Highly Conflicted, not only in his hatred of me — Massive Trump Derangement Syndrome! — but also, because of disqualifying family conflicts. Boasberg, who is the Chief Judge of the D.C. District Court, seems to be grabbing the ‘Trump Cases’ all to himself, even though it is not supposed to happen that way,” Trump said.

There are a total of 20 judges on the federal district court bench in Washington, D.C. 

Trump cast doubt Thursday on the claim that Boasberg’s assignment was made at random. He also called for Boasberg’s impeachment.

“Is there still such a thing as the ‘wheel,’ where the Judges are chosen fairly, and at random?” he questioned. “The good news is that it probably doesn’t matter, because it is virtually impossible for me to get an Honest Ruling in D.C. Our Nation’s Courts are broken, with New York and D.C. being the most preeminent of all in their Corruption and Radicalism.” 

Boasberg is set to hold an emergency hearing Thursday afternoon on the Signal group chat lawsuit. The plaintiffs requested to prevent any messages Trump administration officials sent in the group chat from being deleted.

Boasberg is also overseeing the Trump administration’s high-profile antitrust case against Meta. The Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit accused Meta of creating an illegal monopoly after it acquired Instagram and WhatsApp. 

The judge was involved in a 2023 court case in which he ordered former Vice President Mike Pence to testify in front of a grand jury about his contact with the president in the days leading up to Jan. 6, 2021.
