The rumors about who former President Donald Trump’s vice president will be have circulated for months since he became the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party. Since Trump’s announcement that his eventual nominee for vice president would be in attendance at the first presidential debate, the speculation has only grown.
While his pick remains unknown, amid the post-Biden debate debacle, an announcement would be good for the country. Much of the nation is stuck on the fact that the White House has basically lied to the public by saying that Biden has been basically doing trigonometry and cartwheels for the past few months.
Trump’s VP announcement would elevate his claim of being committed to solutions. It would also help more hesitant Trump supporters feel more comfortable rallying around him as the nominee.
In 2016, when Trump announced Mike Pence as his pick for vice president, the two leaders often had their styles contrasted in media portrayals. CNN said: “The pick sets up a stark clash in styles: a brash presumptive nominee with a tendency to freelance into controversies alongside a cautious former congressional leader who’s stuck close to conservative orthodoxy since starting his career in talk radio.” Mike Pence was a counterbalance, so who will Trump choose now?
Almost all of the candidates rumored to be on the short list for the vice presidency would bring more people to support Trump. They would balance out Trump and increase his appeal. Candidates such as Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) would bolster his approval with women. Stefanik could also capitalize on her deep roots in Republican politics as a staffer for former President George W. Bush and aide to former House Speaker Paul Ryan. She could act as a bridge between the establishment Republicans and more radical Trump supporters. The disagreements she initially had with Trump have faded over the years. Stefanik has emerged as one of Trump’s most important defenders during his first impeachment in 2019, and she has embraced that role ever since.
Another candidate in consideration is Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who has the potential to attract unsure younger voters to Trump’s base. Vance has garnered attention for his strong stance on foreign policy early in his Senate career despite running for office as recently as 2021. Emerging as one of Trump’s staunchest allies in the Senate, Vance appeals to Republicans seeking to empower younger generations or change old norms. While aligning closely with Trump’s policies, Vance presents them in a distinct package tailored to his voter demographic.

Announcing whoever he chooses now will allow the news cycle to get out of talking about Biden’s performance from the debate. This is not to say his debate performance shouldn’t be talked about — because it absolutely should be. It is to allow further contrast as this announcement would give people something to point to and say the candidates on the Trump ticket are better, especially since a vote for Biden is later a vote for Harris.
This would provide yet another example for voters why Trump is the better choice when placed into comparison with the Biden we have seen over the last few years and on the debate stage. This would provide the jump in the polls that the Trump campaign needs. This would secure the win.
