NextImg:Trump sends new round of letters announcing tariffs on seven nations

President Donald Trump has sent out a new round of tariff threats ahead of his latest implementation deadline.

After sending out 10 letters on Monday, Trump added seven more on Wednesday, which was supposed to be the implementation deadline for “Liberation Day” tariffs.

Instead, the new implementation date will be Aug. 1, giving the Trump administration time to continue trade negotiations with countries around the world.

Wednesday’s letters included 20% import duties on the Philippines, 25% on Moldova, 30% on Iraq, 30% on Algeria, 30% on Libya, 25% on Brunei, and 30% on Sri Lanka.

“We have decided to move forward with you, but only with more balanced, and fair, TRADE,” reads the letter to Brunei. “Therefore, we invite you to participate in the extraordinary Economy of the United States, the Number One Market in the World, by far.”

The letters state that the U.S. has a trade deficit with each of the countries in question, and that all new tariffs will come on top of previously announced sector tariffs on products like steel and aluminum. They also promise any new tariffs announced against the U.S. will be matched and topped with an additional 25% duty.

“Please understand that these Tariffs are necessary to correct the many years of Brunei’s Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers, causing these unsustainable Trade Deficits against the United States,” the letters read. “This Deficit is a major threat to our Economy and, indeed, our National Security!”

“If you wish to open your heretofore closed Trading Markets to the United States, and eliminate your Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policies and Trade Barries, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter,” it adds, finishing with, “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The Aug. 1 deadline extension is the second since the tariffs were announced on April 2. The first was to July 9, when the administration touted a goal of reaching 90 deals in 90 days. Only a handful of deals have emerged in that time frame, including with the United Kingdom, China, and Vietnam.

Trump has also announced an additional 10% tariff on the “anti-American” BRICS organization, upping the ante with several major trading partners as he continues his trade negotiation regime.
