President-elect Donald Trump reaffirmed his opposition to Japanese-owned Nippon Steel acquiring U.S. Steel in a Truth Social post made on Monday.
“I am totally against the once great and powerful U.S. Steel being bought by a foreign company, in this case Nippon Steel of Japan,” Trump wrote. “Through a series of Tax Incentives and Tariffs, we will make U.S. Steel Strong and Great Again, and it will happen FAST! As President, I will block this deal from happening. Buyer Beware!!!”
Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel reached an agreement last December that Nippon Steel would acquire the U.S. steel company for $14.9 billion at a 40% premium on its stock price.
As part of the agreement, Nippon Steel vowed to invest at least $1.4 billion in United Steelworker-represented facilities, keep plants open and not conduct layoffs.
The deal is currently being reviewed by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which is tasked with ensuring there are no national security concerns with the merger. The committee may recommend President Joe Biden to block the transaction, a power provided to him under federal law.
Like Trump, Biden has also stated his opposition to Nippon Steel’s acquisition of U.S. Steel.
“U.S. Steel has been an iconic American steel company for more than a century, and it is vital for it to remain an American steel company that is domestically owned and operated,” Biden said in a statement in March.

Meanwhile, U.S. Steel said that Nippon Steel’s acquisition was crucial to ensuring its prosperity. U.S. Steel said if the deal collapses it would be forced to shutter its headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“This transaction should be approved on its merits,” U.S. Steel said in a statement. “The benefits are overwhelmingly clear. Our communities, customers, investors, and employees strongly support this transaction, and we will continue to advocate for them and adherence to the rule of law.”
