NextImg:Trump says he left 'nice note' for Biden when leaving office

Former President Donald Trump said he left a "nice note" for President Joe Biden when the former was leaving the White House in January 2021.

Trump, in an interview for NBC News's Meet the Press to air on Sunday, said he believes it is up to Biden to reveal what the note said but that he "took a lot of time in thinking about it."

"You know, it's interesting he actually said he thinks it's up to me to do. I actually think it's up to him to do," Trump said.

"I left him a note, and it was very — it was a nice note. I took a lot of time in thinking about it. I'd love him to do a great job, even if it was very bad politically," he continued.

The cordial remarks about his 2020 general election opponent are a departure from Trump's typical manner of referring to Biden as "crooked" and Biden's administration as "radical left thugs." A report from the New York Times in 2022 said Biden remarked that Trump was "more gracious in the letter than he had anticipated."

During Trump's interview for Meet the Press, he also said that his wife, former first lady Melania Trump, would be hitting the campaign trail "pretty soon" after not making appearances at his campaign events since he announced his 2024 candidacy last year.

“When it’s appropriate, but pretty soon,” Trump said during a clip from the interview, which aired on NBC's Today on Friday. “She’s a private person, a great person, very confident person, and she loves our country very much. She’ll be at the appropriate time she’ll be out there. Honestly, I like to keep her away from it — it’s so nasty and so mean.”

Trump is the clear front-runner in the Republican primary, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, leading his next closest opponent, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), by more than 40 percentage points. Winning the GOP nomination would almost certainly set up a rematch against Biden in the general election.
