Former FBI Director Christopher Wray has some “explaining to do,” in response to a new Jan. 6 report stating 274 FBI agents took part in the Capitol riot, President Donald Trump said.
The agency had “274 plainclothes agents” embedded in the crowd storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, The Blaze, citing a congressional source, reported on Thursday. The source also said, “The number is not necessarily a surprise, since the FBI often embeds countersurveillance personnel at large events.”

The Department of Justice Inspector General ruled that there were no “undercover [FBI] employees in the various protest crowds, or at the Capitol, on January 6,” in December 2024 under the Biden administration. The report does state the FBI had 26 confidential informants at the riot.
“It was just revealed that the FBI had secretly placed, against all Rules, Regulations, Protocols, and Standards, 274 FBI Agents into the Crowd just prior to, and during, the January 6th Hoax,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, referring to the report.
“This is different from what Director Christopher Wray stated, over and over again!” he added.
The president claimed that FBI agents there were “probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists.”
“I want to know who each and every one of these so-called ‘Agents’ are, and what they were up to on that now ‘Historic’ Day,” he wrote.
Trump then said Wray will have to explain the FBI agents allegedly being there, and said he’s been “caught lying” along with former FBI Director James Comey. A newly-appointed prosecutor indicted Comey on Thursday.
“Many Great American Patriots were made to pay a very big price only for the love of their Country. I owe this investigation of “Dirty Cops and Crooked Politicians” to them! Christopher Wray, the then Director of the FBI, has some major explaining to do. That’s two in a row, Comey and Wray, who got caught LYING, with our Great Country at stake. WE CAN NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN TO AMERICA AGAIN!” he concluded.
Trump appointed Wray to his former position during his first term, and he stayed until resigning just before the president took office a second time.
The 2022 raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, during the investigation into his handling of classified documents, was headed by Wray. The raid angered Trump, who called it at the time “not necessary or appropriate” and said such a raid “could only take place in broken, Third-World Countries.”
The president has sought investigations into those he claims bent or broke the rule to go after him as a candidate, as a president, and as a former president. He recently directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to bring cases against Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Federal Reserve board member Lisa Cook, and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) in a public Truth Social post.
“We can’t delay any longer,” Trump wrote. “JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!”

Wray was not among those he directed Bondi to bring cases against. But Trump’s latest Truth Social signals the administration will look into Wray.
Trump’s administration has also not released any further evidence to support the report.
