NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland — President Donald Trump delighted the packed crowd of supporters who eagerly listened to his Conservative Political Action Conference address Saturday afternoon.
This was Trump’s first time speaking to the CPAC audience since he was reelected president in November and the GOP took control of both chambers of Congress.

“Welcome back to the nation’s capital, where our movement is thriving, fighting, winning, and dominating Washington like never before,” Trump boasted to the audience gathered at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.
Trump claimed the GOP “took back our country” and was now “liberating our country” from Democrats.
“But now it’s my honor to address you for the first time as your 47th president,” Trump continued to loud applause before the crowd started chanting “USA!”
During the nearly 75-minute speech, Trump boasted about cracking down on illegal immigration, touted Elon Musk’s efforts through the Department of Government Efficiency to root out wasteful spending in the federal government, and received loud applause over his executive order banning transgender athletes from women’s sports.
“Our approval rating is now the highest ever across all demographics,” the president said about his one-month-old administration.
Trump used his CPAC speech as another chance to denounce his Democratic foes, including former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump blasted Biden as the “worst” president and claimed that “everything he touched turned to s***,” delighting the audience. Democrats, according to Trump, have “the worst policy in history.”
Several people who were pardoned by Trump over their participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot repeatedly cheered the president on during his speech.
At various moments, they yelled, “We love you,” “he’s a hero,” and “he’s a president for everyone,” as Trump spoke.
Yet, the day before, some Jan. 6 rioters who were at CPAC said they were grateful for Trump’s clemency but wanted more action from Trump.
“I need my veterans benefits restored. I got a really nasty letter from the VA saying that, because of my conviction … they said I have no longer any right to any disability payments or healthcare, or I can no longer be buried in a veteran cemetery, which is a really horrific insult to a veteran,” said Stewart Rhodes, who was one of the 14 who received a commutation. “I want my rights back, my right to bear arms back. In Texas, where I’m from, I can’t vote.”
After Trump’s speech, several attendees praised the president’s demeanor in interviews with the Washington Examiner.
“I really appreciated how he talked about how the way the justice system was weaponized against us is never going to happen again,” said Matthew Webler, who received a full pardon from Trump for his participation in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. “Because what happened to us being J-6ers is not something that has just started, that was a finely-tuned machine that was focused on us, but it has been tuned for years and years and years on other Americans, and we’re just now exposing it. So it’s a great opportunity.”

“I watch him all the time, every speech, and I’m a forever Trumper, but he looked so young, and he looked fresh,” said Michelle Farrell, a talent manager for some of the prominent Jan. 6 defendants. “His hair was on point.”
Tracy Swain, a 55-year-old retiree from Connecticut, said Trump’s speech was “full of truth, amazing, incredible, and inspiring.”
