The Trump organization broke ground Wednesday on a $1.5 billion luxury residential development with three 18-hole golf courses outside Hanoi, Vietnam.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump held a groundbreaking ceremony. Eric Trump will meet with Ho Chi Minh City officials later Wednesday to discuss a deal on a skyscraper there.

The prime minister said he hopes the visit from Eric Trump “motivated us to expedite this project.” He urged local authorities to give maximum support and facilitate the completion of the expansive resort.

Terms of the collaboration have not been made public, but the consortium previously said it “will focus on developing 5-star hotels, championship-style golf courses, and luxurious residential estates and unparalleled amenities in Vietnam.”

Vietnam was hit with some of the highest U.S. tariff rates of any country, at 46%, when Trump announced his “reciprocal tariffs” on nearly every nation on April 2. A week later, Trump postponed the tariffs for 90 days for every country except China. A new trade deal with Vietnam has not been made.

Vietnamese trade negotiators are reportedly in discussion with U.S. trade officials in Washington. According to Reuters, Vietnamese officials have offered to lower non-tariff barriers and increase their fight against counterfeiting.

They have also offered to provide favorable conditions to Starlink, which is owned by Trump ally Elon Musk. Musk has made a number of international deals since entering the White House.

STEEP TARIFFS APPROVED FOR ASIAN SOLAR IMPORTS

Vietnam’s Communist Party General Secretary To Lam attempted to make good with Trump in a call following the “Liberation Day” tariffs. Trump later described the call as “very productive,” and Trump claimed the country offered to reduce tariffs on U.S. goods to zero.

Since Trump launched his trade war with China originally in 2018, Vietnam has emerged as an attractive substitute for companies looking to move their operation to Asia while avoiding Chinese tariffs, according to a report from the think tank Responsible Statecraft. Vietnam has also become a backdoor for Chinese exports, as it imports and assembles Chinese goods with minimal added value before re-exporting them to countries like the U.S.
